The high plateau — Saxon villages, fortified churches, cool-climate whites.
Overview
Transylvania is Romania's highest wine country: vineyards roll at three to five hundred metres between the Apuseni and the Carpathians, in a climate closer to Alsace than to the Mediterranean.
The wines that come off these hills are taut, mineral, slow to develop. The villages around them — Saxon, walled, painted — are some of the most photographed in Europe. It is a region of long lunches and slower roads.
